Jennifer J. Polzin
Jennifer J. Polzin became Chief Executive Officer on July 1, 2015. Ms. Polzin first joined Tubman (formerly Family Violence Network) in 1992. Throughout her tenure at the organization, she has served in a variety of capacities working with clients, volunteers, community members and staff. She has demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, program design, collaborative community engagement initiatives, fundraising, and public policy work. She is passionate about building strong teams, leading positive change, and creating environments where people can live their best lives and do their best work. Ms. Polzin also has extensive direct service experience working with people of all ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds who have experienced relationship violence, homelessness, addiction, and mental health challenges, and has worked in both shelter and community-based programs.
She currently serves on the Community Board for Hennepin County HealthCare for the Homeless, and is immediate Past Chair of the St. Croix Area Agencies Council. Ms. Polzin served as adjunct faculty in the Department of Human Relations and Multicultural Education at St. Cloud State University for eight years. Her course focused on understanding how power, privilege, resources, institutions and ethnocentric culture affect racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, ageism and disability issues. Ms. Polzin has a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communications, and earned her Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership from St. Catherine University. She and her wife live in south Minneapolis.
Director of Clinical Services
Birgit Olsen Kelly
Dr. Kelly joined Tubman in 2012 and is responsible for daily operations of our mental and chemical health services, including supervision of clinical and contract staff and program management and development. Dr. Kelly has 30 years of experience in the mental health field, including work in community mental health, at Anoka-Metro Regional Treatment Center, private therapy practice, eight years as the Director of Outpatient Services at Touchstone Mental Health, and three years as a Therapist and Clinical Supervisor at Family Life Center. She has a Masters of Social Work from the College of St. Catherine/University of St. Thomas and a PhD from Union Institute & University. She specializes in trauma and vicarious trauma, and has worked with a number of organizations and teams to develop strategies for mitigating the impact of vicarious trauma. She has extensive trauma treatment training from the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute and is one of the local organizers for training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
Director of Legal Services
Ms. Reed joined Tubman in 2019 and is responsible for operational, administrative, and program direction for Tubman’s legal programs. She previously worked as the Civil and Criminal Justice Intervention Coordinator at Cornerstone, leading 10 advocates providing domestic and sexual violence intervention services for 12 police departments. Ms. Reed has experience working with victim survivors, leading teams, and partnering with law enforcement and other systems and community agencies. She is the Board Chair of Standpoint, a nonprofit that supports victims and provides technical assistance to providers across Minnesota. She has been active on the Hennepin County Family Violence Coordinating Council, worked within police departments, and in shelter at Women’s Advocates. She is a graduate from Minnesota State University-Moorhead and obtained her JD from Drake University Law School.
Senior Director of Housing and Youth Development
Ms. Stark joined Tubman in 1998 to oversee services for youth and families by implementing strength-based and trauma-informed approaches to address violence. She leads development, research, and implementation of effective, entrepreneurial, and innovative programs in partnership with local and national initiatives to improve the lives of youth and families. She oversees curriculum development and prevention, intervention, outreach, and youth leadership programs in residential, school, and community settings. She works to build inclusive and responsive systems of care with diverse communities by participating in cross-disciplinary efforts focused on positive youth and family development, violence prevention, and ending homelessness. She serves on various local boards and also represents Tubman on the governing boards for the Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women and the Minnesota Women’s Consortium to enhance research, policy, and practice connections. She has participated in local and national peer leadership collaborations to improve regional program quality, equity, and resource development with and for underserved youth and families. Ms. Stark earned an MA in Professional Counseling with a Marriage and Family Specialty from Argosy University. She has prior experience in chemical and mental health, theatre, peer counseling, training, marketing, social justice leadership, juvenile justice, volunteer coordination, and special education.
Director of Shelter Services
Ms. Tobin joined Tubman in 2019 to lead our domestic violence shelter programs, which have a total of 130 beds. She has over 15 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit programs serving multicultural youth and families experiencing poverty. Previously, she was the Juvenile Justice Division Director at The Link where she led programs that created pathways out of the criminal justice system for youth and families. Ms. Tobin brings considerable experience coaching, supervising, and building strong and effective teams; working with multidisciplinary community partnerships; designing and implementing new programs; managing complex funding streams and grants; and leading agency-wide strategic initiatives. She has played a key role in increasing the voice and leadership influence of people using social services into the programs impacting them and is passionate about social justice, program evaluation and development. Ms. Tobin has a B.A. degree in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities.
Director of Finance
Ms. Anderson became Tubman’s Director of Finance in 2005. She is responsible for accounting and financial reporting for the agency, including accounts payable and payroll, billing, annual audits and budget, and grants. Prior to joining Tubman, she worked for 17 years as an independent auditor for Baker Tilly Virchow Krause LLP, which included performing independent audits of Tubman for 10 years. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Minnesota-Duluth and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Chief Operations Officer
Ms. Brinkman joined Tubman in 1993 and was the Senior Projects Manager for the building of Harriet Tubman Center West in Minneapolis. As the Chief Operating Officer, she has helped to create systems for accountability, innovation, best practices, and operating procedures. She oversees all administrative, human resource, information technology, safety and security and risk management activities of the agency. Ms. Brinkman’s background in economics (University of St. Thomas) and thirty years of experience informs her ongoing implementation of administrative best practices across the agency. Ms. Brinkman serves on the Board of Directors of Metropolitan Alliance of Connected Communities.
Director of Development
Ms. Hobson has been with Tubman since 2009, and became the Director of Development in 2016. She is responsible for the annual fundraising plans and objectives which include grant writing, sponsorships, events, group volunteer engagement and individual giving programs. In her previous role of Community Relations Manager, Ms. Hobson coordinated all fundraising events, donation drives, speaking engagements, and volunteer groups from corporate and community partners. Before joining Tubman, Ms. Hobson served as the founder and owner of a residential living program for women in early stages of substance abuse recovery. She was a partner in a start-up real estate brokerage and has experience in industrial psychology. Ms. Hobson holds a B.A. in Communication Arts & Sciences from Michigan State University and completed the Fundraising Certificate Series from University of St. Thomas.
Director of Communications
Ms. Truscott is responsible for directing the organization’s communications initiatives, including public policy, media relations, community education, and volunteer services. She joined Tubman in 2016. Previously, she was Communications Director for the Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, where she guided the development of communications plans, managed a variety of communications channels, and collaborated with development and public policy staff to achieve organizational goals. For eight years, she was a journalist for a group of newspapers in Missouri and Arkansas and eventually became a general manager and editor of print and digital publications. She also worked as a volunteer advocate for a community domestic violence program, primarily providing hotline crisis intervention and court advocacy. She has a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
