"WhyCare?" during Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Month—a time to reflect on the ways in which we take care of our minds, as well as our bodies. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has declared this year’s theme for Mental Health Month to be “WhyCare?”

"Care has the power to make a life-changing impact on those affected by mental health conditions. Through our own words and actions, we can shift the social and systemic barriers that prevent people from building better lives.”

There are different ways to show care for yourself and others: sending check-in texts or calls to friends and loved ones, taking time to focus on yourself, eating well, and creating time to be with community.

May is also Tubman’s month in partnership with the Twin Cities Co-op Partners for their Change Matters campaign. During this month, The Wedge, The Wedge Table, and Linden-Hills Co-ops will ask customers to “Round up at the Register” to support a new on-site food pantry and nutrition workshops for clients at Tubman Chrysalis Center.

Tubman Chrysalis Center is Tubman’s licensed outpatient clinic, which offers a wide range of services for people with mental health, chemical health, or co-occurring disorders. Many of our clients, up to 88%, live in poverty and have limited access to fresh, wholesome food. In order to support their healing process, we are adding on-site food support and nutrition workshops. We know that a healthy body supports a healthy mind and hope that removing this barrier provides further holistic support for their healing.

Supporting the food pantry and nutrition workshops embody care as an action. To find out more information about the Change Matters program, visit the Twin Cities Co-op Partners website.
